Community News Update - August 24, 2022

Dear Community,

I want to take a minute tonight to shine a spotlight on an incredibly important debate that’s happening right now at Queen’s Park about the future of our healthcare system.

As it stands, the Ford government has made it quite clear that they are keen to privatize parts of our healthcare system – and we cannot let that happen. Privatization will not fix any of the issues in our system, and in many cases will only exacerbate them. Privatizing services like healthcare make them more expensive, and it will provide a lower quality of care than our public healthcare system.

You don’t have to look far to see an example of this – in fact right here in Ontario during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic we all saw firsthand that death rates were elevated in for-profit LTC homes. The Conservatives want to try and sell this as innovation to Ontarians, but the reality is that what they are proposing is not innovative in the slightest – but rather regressive at its core.

So, here is what we need to do.

Invest in our healthcare workers, build public infrastructure where it is needed, and transform Ontario healthcare into a world leader.

I am 100% committed to protecting our healthcare system.

Coming up this Weekend

A reminder to everyone that coming up this weekend is Sinting Fest on Eglinton West presented by the BBPA – and my office is still looking for volunteers to help out at my booth! If you’re interested – you can sign up for a shift here.

Next, I'm happy to remind everyone once again that there is an important back-to-school supply drive hosted by the great team from Toronto Cares happening right now.

It’s their own words:

For every 2 backpack/kits purchased for $30 each (open to the public and including free delivery), 1 backpack/kit will be donated to a low-income student in your local Toronto neighborhood, PLUS the purchaser will automatically be entered into a draw for a $75 gift card from Mastermind Toys! Please visit https://toronto-cares.ca/back-to-school-supplies for more information.

In Solidarity,
