Community News Update - July 18, 2022

I am deeply honoured to have been put forth by the Ontario NDP as one of our Deputy Speakers in the upcoming legislature. The Deputy Speakers preside over legislative sessions in rotation with the Speaker.

I will be the first Black woman to hold this post in Ontario. I am looking forward to serving in this role alongside my colleagues Bhutila Karpoche and Jennifer French and to making Toronto-St. Paul’s proud. https://www.ontariondp.ca/news/ndp-puts-forward-history-making-appointments-deputy-speakers

The City of Toronto is seeking citizens to advise the City on implementation of the TransformTO Net Zero Strategy. If you are a climate activist or have ideas and expertise to share, then you can apply here to be one of about 20 members of the community on the Climate Advisory Group tasked with advising the city of the TransformTO Net Zero Strategy https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/water-environment/environmentally-friendly-city-initiatives/transformto/?fbclid=IwAR0SKERj9izz98ZFXpt7bKpBnEJntC4oa43UuU2OcrEV02ue1Uc5ekkOgT8

TransformTO is Toronto’s climate action strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2040 – one of the most ambitious targets in North America. The city will establish aspirational goals to achieve zero waste and a circular economy.

To help achieve the 2030 interim targets in key areas such waste, equitable implementation, building standards, energy, transportation and preserving greenspace, they want applicants enthusiastic about climate action to advise them. The Climate Advisory Group (CAG) will have about 20 members from the community. They should meet four times per year, with in person and hybrid meeting options.

The deadline for submissions is July 20 at 11:59pm EST.

On Friday, the Ontario NDP’s provincial council met to move forward the process to choose a new leader for our party and a new leader of the official opposition for Ontario. The new leader will be elected in early March next year, though we don't yet have any announced candidates. You can learn more about the process here https://www.ontariondp.ca/news/ontario-ndp-elect-new-leader-early-2023.

Lastly, today we honour Nelson Mandela, international human rights champion. His struggle for racial justice continues around the world and we must keep working to build the world he dreamed of. Remember his words:  "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

In Solidarity,

Jill Andrew
