This week is ending with another unfortunate rise in new COVID-19 cases province-wide. Ontario reported 340 new cases this Friday, the most since June 26 and a jump of more than 100 since last Friday, when cases were 226. The number of current active cases in the province is 1,879.
I will continue highlighting that vaccination is our best weapon against this disease. About 71.4% of Ontarians aged 12 and older have received two vaccine doses, and we need to increase that percentage. If you live in the riding and are having trouble scheduling your shot, reach out to my office. My team will be happy to help you locate a vaccination clinic or find any necessary support service.
On the topic of vaccinations, there was confusion earlier this week regarding the Ontario NDP's position on mandatory vaccines for health and education workers. Leader Andrea Horwath clarified her position yesterday, and I'd like to take the opportunity to make it known that I am a strong proponent of vaccines as the best method to keep us safe. As an immunocompromised person, I jumped on the opportunity to be double-vaxxed without hesitation to keep myself and others safe. I have long asked for you all to do so, as well. Science shows they work. The case counts show they work. We need to do all we can to stop this virus, and that includes getting vaccinated and continuing to follow health protocols.
I am happy to announce that, on August 16 at 5:30 pm, MPP Marit Stiles and I will be holding a virtual Education Townhall. We will be discussing steps needed to ensure a safe return to schools in September. We can’t afford another year of disruptions, closures or painful remote and hybrid learning. We also want to ensure our kids are safe and will be pushing the Ford government to adopt necessary measures, such as:
Smaller class sizes
Upgrades to school ventilation systems
Ensure vaccines are available to all staff and students who are eligible
More classroom supports for kids with special needs
In-school mental health and wellness support.
RSVP here and email your questions to [email protected] with the subject "Education Townhall.”
