Community News Update - June 2, 2023

Dear community,

Enough is enough!

From the profitization of vital public services, to the skyrocketing cost of living, to the secret deals that are getting the rich richer on YOUR dollar, Ontarians have had it with a government that vehemently works against them..

Tomorrow, Ford and his government will find that out.

Starting at noon in Nathan Phillips Square, join the Ontario Federation of Labour, alongside your Ontario NDP, labour allies, and thousands of Ontarians as we march in solidarity for a better Ontario; an Ontario that works for ALL of us.

It's going to be a bright, sunny weekend by the looks of it, as a great time to get out in community! If you haven't already, make sure to check out The Colourway at Yonge + St. Clair, as a vibrant pop of colour added to the neighbourhood!

I joined them yesterday as they celebrated the installation's unveiling and was amazed to see firsthand the impact public art has on community building, mental health, and our collective wellbeing. Thank you to Yonge + St. Clair for this welcome addition to St. Paul's!

The Colourway is running now through July 7th. Click here to learn more.

In addition to celebrating The Colourway, I spent yesterday visiting McMurrich's Fun Fair to pick up some goodies! The real treat, however, was seeing the joy of McMurrich students and hearing of their schoolyear highlights as they look forward to their next!

A big thanks goes out to the teachers, parents, and volunteers who made this happen. It's been a tough year for many, including our community's young ones, making your efforts extra appreciated.

Yesterday marked the start of Pride Month as a time to celebrate the love, inclusion, and many contributions of Ontario's queer community.

As the city & province is painted rainbow and flags fly high (mostly...), this month also acts as a needed reminder that Pride has not always been celebrated. In fact, it started as anything but; as a riot in the face of hateful, violent attacks against 2SLGBTQIA+ community members for simply being who they were.

While progress has been made, this year's Pride Month has a more somber tone than recent years past, as rising hate & violence against the Queer community is palpably felt. It is with that, I invite you to take this month as a time of reflection, as much as celebration, to how you'll recommit to keeping 2SLGBTQIA+ folks safe and our progress moving forward.

Yesterday also marked Injured Workers Day in Ontario, thanks to my colleague and your strong Labour Critic, MPP West.

No one chooses to be injured on the job. The same way no one chooses a life of poverty. But that's just where a workplace injury leads, for more than 50% of injured workers living in Ontario.

THAT is a choice; one of policy and one Ford continues to make so long as he fails to overhaul a deeply-broken WSIB system.

But rest assured that yesterday, today, tomorrow, and 365 days a year, your Ontario NDP is continuing the fight for a better WSIB system. A WSIB that actually protects workers, as Ford works only to protect employer profits.

It's about that time of year again when many of us suffer through the sweltering heat in too-warm apartments! Make sure you know your rights when it comes to air conditioner installation and fees!

Each year, grade 7 & 8 students are selected to take part in the coveted program, acting as aides to MPPs in the chambers, while also getting to see and learn of Ontario's parliamentary process, meet members from both sides of the aisle, and make friends from all across Ontario, Having seen many students of St. Paul's take on the important role over the years, and hear the joy and lifelong memories they & their families made, I highly encourage your child's application.

Learn more of the program and how to apply here. If you have any questions, reach out via email at [email protected] or by phone at (416) 325-7457.

Each year across Ontario, thousands of lives are lost to overdoses. We need every level of government to prioritize implementing harm reduction strategies to combat these senseless deaths, and you can help.

As many of you know, Naloxone is a medication that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, and these kits are FREE with training at participating pharmacies across the city. Together, we can prevent unnecessary deaths and work toward a more compassionate society that is safe safe for everyone.

Find a pharmacy with Naloxone kits near you, and make sure you can recognize the signs of an overdose.

Toronto Cares Initiative will be hosting their Spring Into Summer Social Fundraiser on June 14th - you don't want to miss this!

Do you know someone who is a passionate member of Toronto’s Black communities, and interested in guiding the continued work of the Toronto Action Plan to Confront Anti-Black Racism? Applications to join the Partnership and Accountability Circle (PAC) are now open and will close on June 6th, 2023.
